Amokabel installs a unique 50/52kV covered conductor in Sweden – A breakthrough in sustainable power transmission

Last week, Amokabel, in collaboration with E.ON and One Nordic, took a major step forward in the development of Sweden's power grid. A very exciting project with a 50/52kV covered conductors is currently being installed in southern Öland, a technology and process that is still unique in the country and will contribute to a safer and more sustainable energy supply. Last week, E.ON held a press event to highlight this.

"We are very proud to contribute to a more sustainable and reliable future through our innovative solutions for power transmission. This installation is an important step forward for us, and we see great potential to integrate covered conductors into more Swedish power grids, which will both increase reliability and reduce maintenance costs," says Oskar Wijk, Product Manager at Amokabel.

Why the 50/52kV Covered Conductor on Öland?

Increased Safety: By preventing direct contact between vegetation and power lines, the risk of electrical faults and fires is dramatically reduced. This is especially important in landscapes where forests and vegetation surround the power grids.

Bird Protection: Covered conductors help protect bird life by reducing the risk of collisions with or contact with live parts of the lines. This is an important contribution to preserving biodiversity.

Weather Resistance: In a country like Sweden, where storms and strong winds often affect the stability of the power grid, this technology offers a more robust solution, reducing outages. This means fewer interruptions and greater reliability for consumers, even under extreme weather conditions.

Efficient Implementation: By utilizing existing infrastructure, including poles and roads, the project has saved both time and resources, making the installation more efficient and sustainable.

Significance for Öland

Over the past year, Öland has suffered as many as six major power outages, negatively affecting both households and businesses. With the installation of the covered conductor, we are improving the grid’s resilience and reliability in an area where weather conditions and wildlife have previously caused significant challenges. The installation on Öland is a clear example of how we strive to meet the increasing demands for both safety and sustainability in the energy sector. Through our continued development of covered conductors, we are taking a major step towards future-proofing Sweden’s power grid and creating a more sustainable energy supply.

Amokabel’s Vision for the Future

The installation on Öland is an example of how we aim to meet the growing demands for safety and sustainability within the energy industry. As we continue to develop and improve our solutions, more projects will be undertaken with the goal of future-proofing Sweden’s power grid and contributing to a more sustainable energy supply. This development is not only crucial from a technical perspective but also from an environmental one. Covered conductors represent a key step in reducing our ecological footprint while increasing the safety and resilience of power networks.
