CUTTING-EDGE CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE
How power supply is secured for Sweden’s archipelago traffic
The archipelago is being electrified – and at a rapid pace. On the Ljusterö and Vaxholm ferry routes in the Stockholm archipelago, infrastructure is now being prepared for the next generation of ferry transport: electric road ferries. To meet the high demands for power capacity, operational reliability, and environmental consideration, extensive electrical work is underway on land.
Behind the scenes, precise technical work is in progress. Between transformer stations and fast-charging points at the quays, specially adapted cables are now being installed – designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the archipelago. The project, carried out in collaboration between CKG and Amokabel, is a key component in the transition to fossil-free ferry traffic in the region.

Challenges in a demanding environment
Installing charging infrastructure for marine transport in the archipelago is far from a standard assignment. It requires not only technical expertise, but also a deep understanding of natural conditions and the importance of operational reliability.
– We chose cabling that can withstand the harsh climate over time. It’s not just about delivering power – it has to work long-term, even when exposed to mechanical stress, cold, moisture, and salt, says Christoffer from CKG, who has played a key role in the project.
Next step: A model for the future
With installations now in place in Ljusterö and Vaxholm, opportunities open up for more similar initiatives in Sweden’s archipelagos. CKG and Amokabel see the project as an important milestone – not only for the region, but also as an example of how sustainable electrical infrastructure can be built in demanding environments.
– This is a solution that can be scaled. It shows that with the right technology and partners, we can create real change – even in very challenging locations, concludes Christoffer.
Why CKG chooses Amokabel
- Amokabel is the cable supplier we have collaborated with when it comes to customized cables. In several projects, for example, we have used power cables that are subjected to movement over time, where Amokabel has developed materials that can withstand these stresses. Our installations involve relatively high loads on cabling, and Amokabel provides solid technical documentation that enables us to make reliable calculations.
- Delivery times have been satisfactory in our projects. Since the scope of the projects has so far been relatively large, planning and design have been carried out well in advance of installation.
- Price is, of course, an important factor, but our assessment is that Amokabel is at a reasonable and competitive level in relation to the products they deliver.
- Handling cable drums weighing over 4,000 kg has worked well. We have also had the possibility to control how cable lengths are cut based on our needs.
- For our marine DC power installations, we have developed cables with different colors on the inner sheath, which serves as quality assurance when identifying polarity. We have also been able to choose drum sizes according to our needs, which has facilitated handling at installation sites.
- We exclusively use certified connection cables from Amokabel; they maintain a high standard and are adapted to our production.
- We have received good responses to our questions and quick feedback on quotation requests.
- In general, within our market, the responsibility often lies with the contractor to select the right products and ensure they meet relevant certification requirements.
CKG – The future
CKG will focus on installations in environments and applications that require a high level of system understanding and careful material selection. Going forward, we are looking at several similar installations, such as charging infrastructure in Stockholm and Gothenburg, while also carrying out electrification projects and manufacturing main switchboards and control cabinets.
